Hi there and welcome back, CoContesters, to our regular Saturday remodelling sessions! This week we are featuring even more fabulous design advice for you to confidently update your home. Last week, we took a look at how to beautify your home’s linoleum but today, we’ll be taking a good, thorough look at the ins and outs of designing small balconies.

During the warmer months, there is nothing nicer than having a private outdoor space to take in the sun’s rays. If you live in a bustling city you will most likely be dealing with a smaller and more compact balcony or terrace, while suburban dwellers will probably have a larger veranda or patio to work with. If the area you are working with is small you will definitely find a few handy hints below. In addition, if you’re space is large, we’re sure you will still locate some design gems in the article below!

Accessorise!

First up we are taking a look at accessories. Accessories will really make your space shine, and it is important to consider what you would like to include before you start planning and devising a theme or layout.

We recommend taking a look at the following items for your small balcony:

  • Foldable seating.
  • Balcony curtains.
  • Planters.
  • Built-in seating.
  • Balcony BBQ.
  • Removable surfaces and tables.

The above example from German company Die Balkongestalter shows exactly how you can include a range of accessories, while retaining a usable and stylish space. If you would like to see this balcony makeover in its entirety, check it out here.

Focus on the flooring

Flooring makes a huge difference to the overall ambience and atmosphere on a balcony space. Because of this, it is essential you choose the right flooring for the right space. Tiles, timber, stone and concrete all work well, consequently altering and changing the aesthetic.

Additionally, you might want to consider outdoor rugs to improve the warmth and hospitality of your small space. In the example above we see a gorgeous timber deck that works beautifully paired with matching planters and built-in seats.

Choose your furniture wisely

When designing small balconies, it is crucial you choose your furniture wisely. Consider choosing a statement piece for the area, such as this gorgeous timber number above.

Work with the space you have, and avoid furniture that is too large for its space, consequently causing the balcony to feel cramped and cloistered.

Design based on what you will use the space for

Before we end, it is important to make mention of the importance of designing a space for its intended purpose. Will you use the space to relax, or are you wanting an entertaining area? Decide on the main use and your desire for the area, while also working with the available space you have been given.
