Beginning home DIY can seem like a daunting task. Keeping it green and ecological can seem like an even bigger task. January is the perfect time of year to start doing projects around the house. It doesn’t matter if you are a competent DIY’er or a novice, these tips will be beneficial to all.

Home DIY should be fun, achievable and something you can do yourself. Take some old chairs for example. You can make these really exciting and diverse. Colour the legs differently, cover the cushion with some funky fabric and just make them your own. It doesn’t take a lot of knowledge, but can make all the difference in livening up a dining room or living area.

Use natural timber

Furniture you make yourself doesn’t have to look home made. In fact you can get an extremely attractive look with a little know how. This lumber chair is made from recycled timber and it looks stunning. It wouldn’t look out of place on a patio, by a pool or in a grassy area. The natural tones of the wood are warm and inviting. The curve is obvious, but the straight lines are very modern. You can stain the timber any colour you like, or sand it back to highlight it’s natural hues.

Tabletop temptations!

You can take a lot of different ideas and turn them into something inspiring. Old placemats, record covers or sign cut offs can make a unique top for your dining or coffee table. You have the power to choose classic, modern or even a rustic looking table and top it with your choice to match. It will look beautiful and bespoke. And if you don’t want to do it yourself, companies such as Remade In Britain sell them.

Light up your Life

Contemporary design usually means straight lines and sharp edges, but it goes further than that. It fits in perfectly with the theme of home DIY. Take some old jars, cut a hole in the lid and you will have transformed a dull light hanging into something wonderful. You can choose jars of different sizes and have a pendulum effect hanging over a dining table or in your kitchen. Making the wires different lengths really adds to the final look too. If you want something a little funkier, try using colour glass.

“Wooden pallet with glove” by Dbenbenn

Pallets have really increased in popularity in the last couple of years. This is simply because they are cheap to come by and plentiful. You can buy beds, tables and shelves all made out of the timber of these used and discarded items. The wood can be taken as it is, or broken up to create smaller items, such as shelving. It is easy to strip and paint the timber, which makes it the perfect green DIY start up project.
